Why Are My Teeth Stained?

Everybody wants a bright, beautiful smile. However, sometimes our teeth can lose their pearly whiteness, becoming stained, dull, or yellow. Your teeth can lose their brightness for a number of reasons, including:

Certain Foods & Beverages

Regularly drinking coffee, tea and red wine can contribute to staining. Intense color pigments called chromogens are found in certain foods and beverages. They can attach to your enamel and cause staining.

Smoking & Tobacco Use

The tar and nicotine found in cigarettes and other tobacco products can turn your teeth yellow or brown over time.

The Aging Process

Below your bright white enamel is a softer, darker material called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer becomes thinner and more of the dentin underneath shows through, making your teeth look dark or dull.

Dental Trauma

If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change color as a result of the injury, becoming brown or gray.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Good at-home care and regular cleanings remove plaque and keep stains from developing on the surface of your teeth. If you don’t practice good oral hygiene and maintain a regular cleaning schedule, your teeth will begin to show it.

Certain Medications

Discoloration is an unfortunate side effect of certain classes of drugs, including some antihistamines, antipsychotics. and high blood pressure medications. Chemotherapy can also darken teeth. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming may have discoloration of their adult teeth later in life.
