A dental crown (also known as a cap) is a fixed dental restoration that covers a problem tooth. Crowns are used to repair teeth that are severely decayed, damaged, or weakened. They can also be used to replace teeth in implant dentistry and can be attached to surgical implants for a natural appearance. Once a crown is cemented in place, it fully restores the shape, appearance, and strength of the tooth underneath it. You will be able to resume normal function, including biting and chewing, without discomfort.
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, porcelain, ceramic, composite resin, and zirconia. At Smiles Dental Center, we offer long-lasting porcelain crowns that look and feel just like your natural teeth.
It usually takes 2-3 visits for a crown to be fully placed. Your tooth will be prepared and impressions will be taken of your tooth, which will then be sent to a dental laboratory. You will receive a temporary crown until your final crown is ready for placement. When your final crown is ready, you will return to have the crown cemented to your tooth for a permanent restoration.
Porcelain crowns typically have a lifespan of 10-15 years. They will eventually need to be repaired or replaced, but you can extend the life of your restoration by practicing good at-home oral hygiene and attending regular checkups and cleanings.
If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge may be recommended to treat your tooth loss and restore your healthy bite. Dentists use bridges to close the gap in your smile. A bridge is a fixed restoration that consists of a series of crowns, called a pontic. The bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap, which are called abutment teeth.
Our bridges are made from high-quality porcelain so that they blend in with your natural smile.
It typically takes 2-3 visits to receive a dental bridge, depending on your unique case and treatment needs.
You can expect your dental bridge to last 10-15 years. Be sure to practice good at-home care and dental hygiene to keep your restoration in the best possible condition.
Missing teeth not only impact your appearance, but they also affect your overall oral health in a number of ways. A dental bridge can address those changes, including:
