At your next check-up, a friendly member of our team will check your teeth for cavities. X-rays will be taken to detect cavities that are unseen or difficult to diagnose. The exam will also include checking your teeth for built-up plaque and tartar. If plaque and tartar build up on your teeth, they can cause serious oral diseases that impact your teeth and gums.
Next, we will check your gums for signs of damage or disease. We use a special dental tool to measure the spaces between your teeth and gums, which are called pockets. With healthy gums, these pockets are shallow. If you have gum disease, the pockets may become deeper and allow bacteria to collect inside of them.
Your check-up will also include a careful examination of your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck. This is to check for any swelling, redness, or possible signs of oral cancer.
During your cleaning, a member of our hygiene team will use special tools to remove any plaque and tartar. This process is called scaling. After your teeth are scaled, we will polish them to remove any surface staining and reveal your bright enamel underneath. The final step is flossing. Your hygienist will use floss to make sure the areas between your teeth are clean and free of any tartar or debris.
No, cleanings are not painful. You may experience some discomfort if you don’t regularly floss or have sensitive teeth, but our hygiene team will make sure you’re comfortable throughout your cleaning.
As much as we love to see you, take care of your teeth and gums between regular dental visits so you can avoid cavities and other emergencies! Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss at least once daily and use a dentist-approved mouthwash to help control plaque, tartar, and bacterial build-up. This will also help to keep your breath fresh and prevent staining.
The American Dental Association recommends seeing your primary dentist twice a year for routine preventative care and checkups. You and your children should expect to visit our office every six months, or as recommended by your dentist to help keep your smiles healthy and bright!
